With competition from big-box stores, department stores and grocers, independent kitchen and gourmet shop retailers offer unique customer experiences and specialty products to set their stores apart and keep customers coming back. Linda Arnold, owner of Southern Home & Kitchen in Winston-Salem, N.C., recommends offering cooking classes to inspire customers. “We bring in local ‘celebrity’ chefs to teach the cooking classes, and some of the chefs are great about promoting items that we sell. We give everyone 10 percent off the whole store when they take a cooking class,” Arnold said.
