Field hockey Top 10: Good Counsel, Arundel enter the rankings

St. John’s finally met its match in Good Counsel, which handed the Cadets their first loss of the year thanks to an overtime goal off the stick of senior Margarite Stefanelli. With the 2-1 victory, the Falcons enter the rankings for the first time this season.

The foes will likely meet again in the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament.

W.T. Woodson came up short in an opportunity to climb the rankings, falling to Westfield, 4-0. Broadneck drops after a pair of losses to Spalding and Arundel, which joins the rankings at No. 10.

1. Westfield (13-0) Last ranked: 1

Mackenzie Karl scored three first-half goals against Centreville, pushing her season total to a team-high 19 goals, and the Bulldogs ran away with the 3-0 rivalry game victory.

2. Severna Park (8-0) LR: 2

The Falcons enacted revenge for last season’s Maryland 4A East region championship loss to South River, picking up a 2-0 win over their Anne Arundel County foe.

3. St. Stephen’s/St. Agnes (7-3) LR: 8

The Saints flexed their scoring muscles in a 6-1 victory over Madison. Emma Day and Annie Dyson scored two goals each in the win.

4. Spalding (5-3) LR: 4

After falling to McDonogh, one of the top teams in the Baltimore area, the Cavaliers steadied the ship with an impressive 3-2 win over Broadneck.

5. Good Counsel (8-3) LR: NR

The Falcons shook up the WCAC scene with a surprise 2-1 victory over St. John’s. They followed it up with a 3-2 win over Bel Air.

6. St. John’s (7-1) LR: 3

After the Good Counsel loss, the Cadets aim to get back to their winning ways Wednesday against Bishop Ireton.

7. Broadneck (4-2-1) LR: 5

The Bruins rebounded from two straight losses in a big way, recording a 10-0 victory over North County.

8. W.T. Woodson (11-2-0) LR: 6

The Cavaliers were no match for Westfield in a 4-0 loss, which ended their three-game winning streak.

9. Glenelg (6-2) LR: 9

The Gladiators picked up 3-0 victories over both Reservoir and Mount Hebron.

10. Arundel (5-3-2) LR: NR

The Wildcats continued an up-and-down campaign with an upset 2-1 win over Broadneck.
